Dear Friend ,
Akwaaba (‘welcome’, in the Twi language of Ghana),
I am sitting in our accommodation in Accra as I write this CEO letter and I wanted to give you a glimpse of what it is like for us here. (By the time you get this CEO letter, I will be back in NZ.)
Last week, on Tuesday, we went to the village, Akurakese, where the original pole has been operating for 2 years since our last trip. We did some updates and maintenance on the pole and we were able to have a great chat with the village chief. What was so encouraging was that, when we last came, the village was 50/50 Christians and Muslims. This time the chief, who is himself a Muslim, said that now, in just two years, the village was over 75% Christian and he indicated, very strongly, that he felt it would not be long before he too, committed his life to Christ. Praise God! That is the effect of the pole being in the village giving Spiritual and physical light. He also mentioned the positive change he had seen in the young people who were listening to the children’s and youth programming. It is a 3.5-hour trip one way, so Tuesday was a long day.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we headed out to the 2 villages where we were to put up two new poles. By the time we had travelled there, dropped the poles off at both villages it was time for bed. I think Andy, Bob, Josh, Robbie and I will all agree that travelling on the roads is exhausting. More often than not, progress is very slow as we navigate our way through huge potholes (really huge! – see the pictures attached).
Thursday saw us at the first village again. It is called Dorfforkame and it’s on an Island in the Volta river. We were welcomed to the Island by the village chief and a group of elders from the village. We got the pole erected and working despite a very heavy tropical downpour and lightning hitting the ground not too far away. Then, back to our accommodation for another night’s rest.
Friday saw us drive to the next village, Doglokpo, where, once again we were welcomed at a ceremony by the village elders. The pole went together and was erected more quickly here because of the lessons learnt the previous day. Unfortunately, there were some unforeseen technical issues which meant although the lights worked when we left the speakers did not. We are going back tomorrow to fix this.
Thank you for praying for us and thank you to those that gave specifically towards these poles. I wish you could see the excitement and then appreciation that the villagers showed in every village when we arrived and when the pole was up and running. You have played an important part in making it possible for 3 villages to hear the Word of God read aloud every single day of the year.
I think of those famous verses in Romans 10 when it talks about how shall they believe if they have not heard? Well, thanks to you and your support, they ARE hearing. Praise God.
Please don’t forget, I would love to come and visit your church, or homegroup. I love telling the stories of lives changed and of all the other wonderful things that are happening here in NZ and around the world as the ministry of Reach Beyond goes beyond borders, beyond words and beyond ourselves.
